Learn about nature. Hike our trails. Paddle Spearhead Lake. Enjoy the solitude...

The mission of the Mississippi Headwaters Audubon Society is to foster personal connections to and stewardship of our natural world.

What we do...
  • Manage a 466 acre preserve located 11 miles southwest of Bemidji called the Neilson Spearhead Center (NSC).
  • Host a summer nature camp, the “Young Naturalist Program", where kids get a hands-on, outdoor nature experience.
  • Host educational events and programs at NSC and in the community to connect people with nature.
  • Advocate for local conservation of important habitats and ecosystems.
Come explore nature with us, or participate in one of our community-based initiatives like Birds, Bees & Butterflies - Bemidji, or Bird City Minnesota.

Peace & Freedom Garden
Come to the Neilson Spearhead Center and enjoy the wonderful signs of the seasons. Bring your camera, binoculars, field guides, and curiosity. We have over 5 miles of trails to explore surrounding Spearhead Lake -  just a few minutes drive from Bemidji.

Can you help with a Beltrami County 'Critter Crossing Survey'?
Students at Bemidji State University are asking the public to help identify Beltrami County Highway locations where where a high density of critters (frogs, turtles, salamanders, ducks, etc.) cross roadways.   Folding 'Caution - Wildlife Crossing' signs will be placed at 10 sites to make these areas safer for wildlife, and people! If you know of specific areas on roads in Beltrami County that are a problem year-after-year, please fill out this survey and let them know.
