Neilson Spearhead Nature Preserve – Fees & Use

The Neilson Spearhead Nature Preserve (NSNP) is a 466-acre sanctuary of forests, wetlands, and Spearhead Lake, perfect for environmental education, research, and outdoor events. Owned and managed by the Mississippi Headwaters Audubon Society, the preserve offers hands-on learning, guided exploration, and a beautiful natural setting for groups of all kinds.

Facilities & Amenities

  • Lehman Lab: Indoor space for 12, screened porch for 15–20, with power, sink, and refrigerator.

  • Picnic Area: Outdoor tables & benches for 50; fire pit available with permission.

  • Jeep Shed: Flexible indoor space for 50 with electricity.

  • Trails & Lake: 5 miles of trails, Spearhead Lake access, and canoe rentals (summer months).

  • Equipment: Binoculars, dip nets, insect nets, and canoe paddles/life jackets.

Water is available late spring through early fall. The preserve is open to the public year-round unless a private event is scheduled.

Reservation Fees

All fees support MHAS programs, preserve maintenance, and year-round public access.

Groups providing educational programming for students or the community.

Half Day (≤4 hours)

  • Up to 20 attendees – $50

  • Over 20 attendees – $100

Full Day (>4 hours)

  • Up to 20 attendees – $100

  • Over 20 attendees – $150

Private Full-Day Event – $250

Other Entities (Businesses, Parties, Weddings, etc.)

Half Day (≤4 hours)

  • Up to 20 attendees – $100

  • Over 20 attendees – $150

Full Day (>4 hours)

  • Up to 20 attendees – $150

  • Over 20 attendees – $200

Private Full-Day Event – $500

Tip: Standard rates allow public access during your event. Choose the Private Event option for exclusive use.

Policies & Use Agreement

All groups must follow our policies to protect the preserve and ensure a safe, enjoyable experience:

  • Reservation Timing: Submit at least 2 weeks in advance; fees due 1 week before your event.

  • Student Groups: 1 adult per 6 students recommended.

  • Programming: Provided by your group unless arranged with MHAS.

  • Care for Property: No campfires (except approved fire pit), hunting, off-road vehicles, alcohol, or collecting plants/animals (fishing allowed). Practice Leave No Trace.

  • Orientation & Reporting: Meet with an MHAS representative before your event and submit a brief summary afterward.
