The Forest Megaphone

Discover Nature, Sound, and Learning in North-Central Minnesota

The Neilson Spearhead Nature Preserve, located near Bemidji, Minnesota, offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore forests, lakes, and wildlife habitats. Central to the preserve is the Forest Megaphone, an innovative acoustic installation that amplifies the subtle sounds of the forest, creating an immersive listening experience.

Forest Megaphone: Listen to the Forest

The Forest Megaphone is a large wooden, conical acoustic structure. Unlike traditional megaphones, it collects and amplifies ambient natural sounds such as:

  • Birdsongs and insect calls

  • Wind rustling leaves

  • Water flowing in streams and lakes

Visitor highlights:

  • Step inside or stand behind it to hear nature like never before

  • A contemplative spot for reflection, mindfulness, or art activities

  • Created in 2025 by Bemidji State University senior capstone students using locally donated, pressure-treated wood

  • Located along the circuit trail around Spearhead Lake, accessible by foot or paddle

Design & Features of the Forest Megaphone

  • Amplifies subtle forest sounds that are often missed

  • Serves as both art and educational installation

Other notable Forest Megaphone installations around the world include: Estonia (Pähni Nature Centre), Adirondacks, NY (Paul Smith’s College), and Houghton, MI (Michigan Tech Trails).
