The Neilson Spearhead Nature Preserve, located near Bemidji, Minnesota, offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore forests, lakes, and wildlife habitats. Central to the preserve is the Forest Megaphone, an innovative acoustic installation that amplifies the subtle sounds of the forest, creating an immersive listening experience.
Forest Megaphone: Listen to the Forest
The Forest Megaphone is a large wooden, conical acoustic structure. Unlike traditional megaphones, it collects and amplifies ambient natural sounds such as:
Birdsongs and insect calls

A contemplative spot for reflection, mindfulness, or art activities
Created in 2025 by Bemidji State University senior capstone students using locally donated, pressure-treated wood
Located along the circuit trail around Spearhead Lake, accessible by foot or paddle

Finding the Forest Megaphone
You can locate the Forest Megaphone on the trail map at the Neilson Spearhead Nature Preserve trailhead kiosk. It’s perched on the western shore of the embankment about 100 meters from the lake.
You can get there by:
Hiking: Follow the western trail along the lake to reach the Megaphone.
Paddling: Canoe or kayak across Spearhead Lake and land at the base of the hill where the Megaphone sits. Then hike the short distance uphill to explore.
Once you arrive, enjoy the unique perspective and sounds of the forest, come on up and hear for yourself!
