Volunteer
Volunteers are at the heart of the Neilson Spearhead Nature Preserve. From restoring trails to welcoming visitors and supporting education programs, volunteers help care for the land and create meaningful nature experiences for people of all ages.
We welcome adults, youth, families, school groups, and corporate teams to be part of this work.
Group Opportunities
Looking to get out of the office, build teamwork, or earn service hours? We welcome school groups, community organizations, and corporate teams to volunteer at Spearhead. Group projects often focus on trail work, habitat restoration, and seasonal stewardship activities.
Land Stewardship
Join staff and fellow volunteers in caring for Spearhead’s forests, wetlands, and prairies. Stewardship work includes invasive species removal, trail maintenance, planting, and habitat restoration that supports birds and other wildlife. Opportunities are offered seasonally and are well-suited for individuals or groups.
For ages 14+ (younger participants may join with an adult).
Education & Programs Support
Support nature-based learning by assisting with youth programs, guided walks, and special events. Volunteers help with hands-on activities, set-up and take-down, and connecting participants to the land through learning and curiosity. Training is provided as needed.
Visitor & Community Engagement
Be a friendly face at the Preserve by welcoming visitors, answering basic questions about trails and programs, and helping people feel at home at Spearhead. This role is ideal for those who enjoy meeting people and sharing their appreciation for nature.
Special Skills & Projects
Have skills in maintenance, woodworking, communications, photography, mapping, or natural sciences? We periodically seek volunteers to assist with special projects that help keep the Preserve running and growing.
